Pupil Leadership

At St Martin’s, we believe that every pupil has the potential to be a leader. Our Pupil Leadership opportunities empower pupils to take on meaningful roles within our school family, fostering responsibility, teamwork and confidence. By giving our pupils a voice and opportunities to lead, we help them develop essential life skills that will serve them well in school and beyond.

What is Pupil Leadership?

Pupil Leadership involves pupils taking on leadership roles, helping to shape the school environment and influence decisions that affect their learning and well-being. Whether through formal roles or daily responsibilities, our pupils are encouraged to be active contributors to the school and wider community.

Benefits of Pupil Leadership:

  • Builds Confidence: Leading others helps pupils believe in their abilities and strengths, boosting their self-esteem.

  • Enhances Communication Skills: Pupil leaders learn to express their ideas clearly and listen to others, fostering strong interpersonal communication.

  • Promotes Teamwork: Working with peers and staff helps pupils develop collaborative skills and learn the value of working together to achieve common goals.

  • Encourages Responsibility: Leadership roles come with responsibilities that help pupils understand accountability and the importance of being reliable.

  • Develops Problem-Solving Skills: Leaders often face challenges that require creative thinking and quick decision-making, skills that are vital in everyday life.

  • Gives Pupils a Voice: Through leadership, pupils play an active role in school decisions, making them feel valued and heard.

Pupil Leadership Opportunities:

At St Martin’s, we offer a variety of leadership roles suited for students of all ages and abilities. These include:

  • School Council Representatives: Pupils elected by their peers to represent their class, discussing ideas and issues that impact the school.

  • Eco-Heroes: Pupils dedicated to promoting sustainability and eco-education. They work with a range of external agencies to support our school in the Pope's wish that we all care for our common home - Laudato Si

  • Class Captains: Leaders who support school spirit and help organise classes including leading prayer as Worship Warriors.

  • Playleaders: Pupils who help younger children at break times, ensuring everyone feels included and supported.

  • Tech Gurus: Pupils responsible for assisting with technology, promoting online safety, and helping their peers with digital learning tools.

  • Library Monitors: Pupils who help manage the library, assisting with book organisation and encouraging reading throughout the school.

  • Attendance Ambassadors: Pupils who champion good attendance and monitor this throughout the school.

  • Sports Captains: Pupils who encourage being active and keeping healthy and support the PE lead with promoting school spirit and help organise sports competitions and events.

How We Support Our Leaders:

We provide training and guidance for all pupil leaders to help them succeed in their roles. Teachers and staff offer ongoing support, ensuring that pupils develop the skills they need to lead with confidence and make a positive impact.

The Impact of Pupil Leadership:

Our Pupil Leadership opportunities not only benefit individual pupils but also enriches the entire school community. By involving pupils in decision-making and giving them leadership responsibilities, we create a school environment where pupils feel empowered, valued, and motivated to contribute.

School Council

The aim of school council is to give the children a chance to voice any opinions and to be active in bringing change that will make our great school even better.

This term we are discussing the outcomes from the pupil survey.

There are four main discussion points

  1. Pupil voice - getting their class' opinions on different topics

  2. Outdoor equipment and playground design

  3. Fundraising ideas

  4. 5 ways to Wellbeing
